ASERTTI's Fall Meeting Agenda Set

Please join us for the Fall ASERTTI meeting, October 23-26, 2007, at the Sagamore Resort (www.thesagamore.com) on New York's beautiful Lake George. This year's meeting includes a keynote address from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) President Paul Tonko, in-depth discussions about ongoing and new ASERTTI programs and cost-shared project opportunities, and highlights of cutting-edge clean energy programs in the Northeast. In addition, we will have a special in-depth look inside the energy innovations and opportunities at NYSERDA – covering buildings, biofuels, power systems and more. 4th Annual Ammonia Fuel Conference

Register now for the 4th annual Ammonia Fuel Conference scheduled for October 15 & 16, 2007 in San Francisco, California. It has been a very encouraging year for the Ammonia Fuel Network (AFN). A patent for a new energy-efficient ammonia synthesis process has been submitted, direct ammonia fuel cell work has made impressive strides, demonstrations of ammonia in SI and CI engines are taking place and more are scheduled for the summer months of 2007, and a wind-to-ammonia demonstration project is just a matter of months away. In addition, ammonia has been added to the list of official alternative vehicle fuels in the state of Washington, and the AFN of ammonia fuel enthusiasts has grown by over a hundred individuals. The conference registration fee is $150 and will include two days of continental breakfast, lunch, and meeting room rental/set up. Please visit http://www.ucs.iastate.edu/mnet/ammonia/home.html to register online today. You can also view a draft agenda at http://www.energy.iastate.edu/becon/download%20NH3/AmmoniaMtg07.html.

Updated State-by-State Solar Incentive Summary Tables

Segue Energy Consulting, LLC, under subcontract to NREL and with the assistance of DSIRE, developed two state-by-state incentive summary tables – one for photovoltaics and one for solar water heating – in April 2007. The tables are an easy reference for identifying tax credits, sales and property tax incentives, rebates, grants, performance-based incentives, loans, and net metering offered by states and utilities. Each entry in the table is hyperlinked to the DSIRE summary for further information.

The summary tables are also available online; please click on the links below:

“Cleaning Your Air” at the University of Illinois

There is a collaborative effort underway between the Energy Resources Center (ERC) and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) dedicated to research in the growing field of air cleaning. This important research looks at a procedure which cleans recirculated air of indoor contaminants to promote energy efficiency. By utilizing a process that recirculates the air, there is less demand for outdoor air and a reduction in the cost to condition it. This collaborative effort underway at the Air Cleaning Technology Laboratory (ACTLab) evaluates the innovative technologies necessary for alternative air cleaning processes and was made possible through funding provided by the National Center for Energy Management and Building Technologies (NCEMBT) as part of a cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy and UIC.

Consortium to Spearhead Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative

California has long sought to capture some of the country’s best geothermal, wind and solar resources throughout California’s deserts and hillsides but has consistently faced the challenge that these resources are often far from the electric transmission grid. As a means around this barrier, California formed a public-private partnership called the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative (RETI) to consider the feasibility of building new transmission lines to access renewable generation. The goal is to bring green electricity to the grid as it is generated from isolated areas of the state or possibly adjoining states. RETI is a means to rapidly develop green energy to meet the state's mandate of producing 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2010 and goal of 33 percent by 2020.

The California Public Utilities Commission, the California Energy Commission, the California Independent System Operator (California ISO) and representatives of publicly owned utilities, including Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA), and the Northern California Power Authority (NCPA) are spearheading the initiative.
