Sixth Annual Ammonia
Carbon-free Liquid Fuel Conference
The Iowa Energy Center, Ammonia Fuel Network, and
the International Association for Hydrogen Energy
are sponsoring the "Sixth Annual Ammonia Carbon-free
Liquid Fuel Conference," October 12 - 13, 2009 at
the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, Missouri. To
date, over twenty speakers are confirmed to cover
all areas of ammonia moving the U.S. to near term
U.S. energy independence. The two-day conference
will be highlighted by guest speaker Matthew
Simmons, Chairman of Simmons & Company
International. Mr. Simmons' recently published book,

DOE Awards $377 Million in
Funding for 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers
In a major effort to accelerate the scientific
breakthroughs needed to build a new 21st-century
energy economy, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu
announced the delivery of $377 million in funding
for 46 new multi-million-dollar Energy Frontier
Research Centers (EFRCs) located at universities,
national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and
private firms across the nation. Of the $377
million awarded to the EFRCs, $277 million comes
from funding made available through the Recovery Act
with the remaining $100 million made from DOE’s
FY2009 budget. The 46 EFRCs are being funded at
$2-5 million per year each for a planned initial
five-year period. In total, the EFRC initiative
represents a planned DOE commitment of $777 million
over five years. To view the full press release as

President Obama
Announces $2.4 Billion in Grants to Accelerate the
Manufacturing and Deployment of the Next Generation
of U.S. Batteries and Electric Vehicles
Further accelerating the manufacturing and
deployment of electric vehicles, batteries, and
components here in America, and creating tens of
thousands of new jobs, President Obama announced 48
new advanced battery and electric drive projects
that will receive $2.4 billion in funding under the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These
projects, selected through a highly competitive
process by the Department of Energy, will accelerate
the development of U.S. manufacturing capacity for
batteries and electric drive components as well as
the deployment of electric drive vehicles, helping
to establish American leadership in creating the
next generation of advanced vehicles. To view the

The Energy Free Home
Challenge
The Energy Free Home Foundation is administering
a $20 million, global incentive prize to design and
build the world’s first Energy Free Home – a net
zero energy home that also has high market appeal,
yet costs no more than a conventional home. Known
as the Energy Free Home Challenge, the effort
marshals significant private, public, academic,
corporate, and entrepreneurial resources to create
the next generation of Energy Free buildings. The
Energy Free Home Foundation strives to inspire the
design and development of scalable systems and
technologies that will be applied to build practical
homes that realize a net zero non-renewable energy
footprint, resulting in significant social and
economic change. Please click here for an

Advanced Gasification
Test Facility Now in Operation
ASERTTI member, Gas Technology Institute (GTI),
recently commissioned an Advanced Gasification Test
Facility (AGTF), a 5-level process research building
which houses pilot-scale gasification and gas
processing systems. This new lab, supported in part
by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic
Opportunity (ILDCEO), bolsters capabilities in
advanced energy development. The AGTF is an
expansion of GTI’s Flex-Fuel Test Facility (FFTF),
designed to evaluate gasification processes for
fossil and biomass solid fuels. The combination of
these facilities allows integrated piloting of
advanced gasification and downstream technologies
that enable commercialization of better processes to
produce power, chemicals, and gaseous and liquid
fuels. To read more about the test facility, please
