Save the Date: 6th Annual California Climate Change Symposium, September 8-10, 2009

The California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program is pleased to announce the 6th Annual California Climate Change Symposium from September 8-10, 2009 at the Sacramento Convention Center.   The symposium will showcase cutting-edge regional climate change science: from greenhouse gas inventory methods, climate change monitoring and analysis, to impacts mitigation and adaptation.  Professor Chris Field, the new chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change (IPCC) Working Group II, will be one of the keynote speakers.   Professor Field will share his insights on the strategy that his working group will use for the preparation of the Impacts and Adaptation Report of the next IPCC Assessment.  For additional information, please click here

DOE Announces $37 Million for Small Business Research and Technology

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced $37 million in funding from the Recovery Act will be made available to qualified small businesses through the Department’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.  The funding announcement emphasizes the Department’s commitment to developing near-term, clean energy technologies while allowing small businesses take part in the new industrial revolution that the sustainable energy economy will bring.  The deadline for submission of applications is September 4, 2009, at 8:00 p.m. EST.  Approximately $8.5 million is expected to be available for new Phase I awards.  Successful applicants may receive up to $150,000 for a Phase I grant for a period of six months to demonstrate the feasibility of the ideas that appear to have commercial potential.  Please click here for more information about DOE’s SBIR and STTR programs.  To view the full press release, please click here

Gas Technology Institute and Consortium for Energy Efficiency Work Together To Advance Gas Energy Efficiency

ASERTTI member, Gas Technology Institute (GTI), and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) have signed a memorandum of understanding that provides a mechanism for the two organizations to collaborate regarding the development, introduction, and market adoption of new, high efficiency natural gas equipment and appliances throughout the United States and Canada.  Please click here to read the GTI press release.

LIPA Announces “Cash for Clunkers” Refrigerator Replacement, Removal and Recycling Program

ASERTTI member, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), announced plans for a new Refrigerator Replacement, Removal, and Recycling program (LIPA’s 4Rs Program) aimed at promoting the elimination of old, inefficient, energy guzzling refrigerators for residential customers.  LIPA’s 4Rs program, which will begin later this year as LIPA procures a vendor to dispose of the old refrigerators, is part of LIPA’s Efficiency Long Island (ELI) initiative. Efficiency Long Island is a 10-year, $924 million energy efficiency program launched this year, which offers a wide array of incentives, rebates and initiatives to LIPA’s residential and commercial customers to assist them in reducing their energy usage and thereby lowering their bills.  To learn more about LIPA’s energy efficiency programs, please click here.

NYSERDA Granted Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and Natural Gas Energy Efficiency Funding

The New York Public Service Commission (PSC) approved approximately $95 million in funding for the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program to develop large-scale renewable energy projects, including wind, biomass, and run-of-river hydroelectric projects. ASERTTI member, NYSERDA, administers the RPS program on behalf of the Commission.  The PSC also approved $24.4 million in funding for an electric and natural gas energy efficiency program to improve the energy efficiency of large-scale industrial customers. National Grid will administer an electric energy efficiency program and NYSERDA will administer a natural gas program.  NYSERDA’s program will focus on key manufacturing sectors in New York such as: chemicals and pharmaceuticals, printing and publishing, automotive, food processing, and forest products.  Data centers are also included since their energy use profile is similar to manufacturing.  Please click here for the NYSERDA press release.

First U.S. Hydrokinetic Project Begins Commercial Operations

The first federally licensed in-stream hydrokinetic power project in the United States began operating commercially on August 20, 2009 on the Mississippi River in Hastings, Minnesota. Hydrokinetic projects produce power from moving water without the use of a dam, and they include wave energy systems and in-stream turbines, which can capture the energy from tidal flows or the flow of a river. The Hastings project, an in-stream turbine from Hydro Green Energy, captures the flow from the output channel of an existing hydropower dam.  Please click here to read the excerpt from EERE Network News.
