ASERTTI Fall Meeting,
October 5-7, 2009

ASERTTI meeting, which will be held October 5-7,
2009 in Palo Alto, California. Hosted by EPRI and
the California Energy Commission (CEC) this year’s
fall meeting will include a presentation on the
California Climate Change Strategy and several
discussion panels cover such topics as Energy
Efficiency Successes, Challenges, Plans for the
Future and Renewable Energy Barriers and Solutions.
Other topics that will be addressed at the meeting
include transportation, smart grid and nuclear

Waste to Energy Opportunities in Wastewater
Treatment Facilities utilizing Anaerobic Digester
and CHP Concepts and Technologies Webinar
The Association of State Energy Research and
Technology Transfer Institutions (ASERTTI), in
conjunction with the National Association of State
Energy Offices (NASEO), and U.S. EPA Combined Heat
and Power (CHP) Partnership, invite you to
participate in a in a 90-minute webinar on energy
efficiency opportunities available for wastewater
treatment facilities (WWTF) utilizing the generated
biogas from the wastewater treatment process through
anaerobic digesters. The webinar will take place on

Secretary Chu Announces
Completion of Critical Energy Conservation Appliance
Standards
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that
the Department of Energy has completed energy
efficiency standards for a critical group of
appliances that will together save up to 1.1 billion
metric tons of carbon dioxide once in effect. In
February 2009, President Obama visited the
Department of Energy to emphasize the importance of
quickening the pace of energy conservation standards
for appliances, while continuing to meet legal and
statutory deadlines. The minimum energy efficiency
standards for beverage vending machines – the last
of the five energy conservation standards – were
published in the Federal Register. Please

Treasury, Energy Announce
$500 Million in Awards for Clean Energy Projects
Marking a major milestone in the effort to spur
private sector investments in clean energy and
create new jobs for America’s workers, Treasury
Secretary Tim Geithner and Energy Secretary Steven
Chu announced $502 million in the first round of
awards from an American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act (Recovery Act) program that provides cash
assistance to energy production companies in place
of earned tax credits. The new funding creates
additional upfront capital, enabling companies to
create jobs and begin construction that may have
been stalled until now. Please

DOE Selects Biofuels Projects
to Receive up to $21 Million in Funding
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu
announced that up to $21 million will be made
available for the selection of five projects that
will develop supply systems to handle and deliver
high tonnage biomass feedstocks for cellulosic
biofuels production. The awards announced are part
of the department’s ongoing efforts to reduce U.S.
dependence on foreign oil, spur the creation of the
domestic bio-industry and provide new jobs in many
