DOE to Fund up to $454 Million for Retrofit Ramp-Ups in Energy Efficiency
Projects Seek to Make Efficiency Accessible to Every Business and Homeowner

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced a new $450 million program designed to catalyze a nationwide energy upgrade that experts estimate could save $100 million annually in utility bills for households and businesses. The Recovery Act’s "Retrofit Ramp-Up" program will pioneer innovative models for rolling out energy efficiency to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in a variety of communities.  Much like past roll-outs for cable TV or the Internet, DOE intends to create models that, when undertaken nationally, will save consumers billions of dollars on their utility bills and make the huge savings of energy efficiency available to everyone.  This competitive portion of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program will target community-scale retrofit projects that make significant, long-term impacts on energy use and can serve as national role models for grassroots energy efficiency efforts.  DOE is seeking public comment on this newly funded program under the Recovery Act.  Public comment ends on September 28, 2009.  The Funding Opportunity Announcement is expected to be released in early October, following the public comment period.  For the full story and a link to the complete RFI, please click here.  For more information on the EECBG program, please click here

DOE Awards Up to $14.6 Million to Support Development of Advanced Water Power Technologies

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that 22 advanced water power projects will receive up to $14.6 million in funding to advance the commercial viability, market acceptance, and environmental performance for new marine and hydrokinetic technologies as well as conventional hydropower plants. The projects selected will further the nation’s supply of domestic clean hydroelectricity through technological innovation to capitalize on new sources of energy, and will advance markets and research to maximize the nation’s largest renewable energy source.  Included among the project awardees is ASERTTI member, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).  For the full story and additional information on the EPRI projects and the other project awards, please click here.

Please mark your calendars for the fall 2009 ASERTTI meeting, which will be held October 5-7, 2009 in Palo Alto, California.  Hosted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), this year’s fall meeting will include a presentation on the California Climate Change Strategy and several discussion panels cover such topics as Energy Efficiency Successes, Challenges, Plans for the Future and Renewable Energy Barriers and Solutions.  Other topics that will be addressed at the meeting include transportation, smart grid and nuclear energy.  Please click here to link directly to the ASERTTI fall meeting page for additional agenda and registration information.

New CSEM Working Paper: Doing Well by Doing Good? Green Office Buildings

The Center for the Study of Energy Markets (CSEM) recently released "Doing Well by Doing Good? Green Office Buildings" as part of their Working Paper Series.  CSEM is a program of the University of California Energy Institute, a multi-campus research unit of the University of California located on the Berkeley campus.  The paper provides evidence on the economic value of the certification of "green buildings" – value derived from impersonal market transactions rather than engineering estimates.  Please click here to link directly to the study.
