DOE Announces Nearly $120
Million to Advance Innovative Weatherization
Projects, Highlights Progress in the Program
Nationally
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven
Chu recently announced award selections for
approximately 120 organizations across the country
that will receive nearly $120 million to drive
innovation under DOE's Weatherization Assistance
Program. These investments will
enable successful weatherization agencies to expand
their programs and will support new pilot projects
to demonstrate innovative weatherization delivery
and financial models and new technologies.
Secretary Chu also announced that the program
reached a new milestone in June - weatherizing more
than 31,600 homes across the country.

DOE Paves Way for Additional
Clean Energy Projects and Jobs through Manufacturing
Solicitation
The U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven
Chu recently announced a new loan guarantee
solicitation for renewable energy manufacturing
projects. The Commercial Technology Manufacturing
Systems and Components solicitation is supported by
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through
Section 1705 of the Loan Guarantee Program. The
solicitation will support the deployment of
renewable energy technologies that reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and help increase employment in the
nation's green manufacturing sector, which is part
of the Administration's long-term plan to create new
green energy jobs. The
solicitation will seek applications for projects
that manufacture commercial technology renewable
energy systems and components, such as wind turbine
systems, blades or solar photovoltaic components.

Brookhaven Awards
$34-Million Contract for Light Source II Buildings
ASERTTI member, the U.S. Department of Energy’s
(DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, recently
announced the selection of the general contractor
for construction of laboratory-office buildings
(LOBs) for the National Synchrotron Light Source II
(NSLS-II), which will be the world’s most advanced
storage ring light source when complete in 2015.
E.W. Howell, based in Plainview, NY, has been chosen
to construct the LOBs, which will provide 124,000
square feet of lab and office space for NSLS-II.
Occupancy of the first LOB is anticipated in 2012,
with the balance of construction lasting through
2013. As the world’s most
advanced storage ring light source, NSLS-II will
foster groundbreaking scientific advances.
Brookhaven’s currently operating light source, NSLS,
draws each year about 2,200 researchers from 400
universities, government labs, and companies to
study a wide range of materials, from catalysts, to
computer chips, to biological molecules.
To take their research to the next level --
to probe even smaller, subtler details of their
samples -- scientists need more intense,
better-focused light. NSLS-II will deliver
world-class intensity and brightness, producing
x-rays 10,000 times brighter than the current NSLS.
Funding for this new construction comes from
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

ECW Workshop: Fostering
Sustainable Behavior: Community-Based Social
Marketing, September 16, 2010, Milwaukee, WI
ASERTTI member, the Energy Center of
Wisconsin, is excited to announce internationally
acclaimed social-marketing expert Doug
McKenzie-Mohr, PhD will present, Fostering
Sustainable Behavior: Community-based social
marketing, September 16, 2010 in Milwaukee, WI.
This full-day workshop will provide participants
with a comprehensive, introductory understanding of
community-based social marketing. This
workshop is designed for energy program designers
and implementers, utility program managers,

NYSERDA-Supported Research
Project Including Cornell and University at Buffalo
Receives $1.3 Million from Department of Energy
A team of research institutions that includes
Cornell University and the University of Buffalo
received a $1.3 million funding award from the U.S.
Department of Energy to study the potential of
storing power plant gas emissions in underground
rock formations. This initiative,
which will also receive $250,000 of ASERTTI member,
NYSERDA, funding will focus on storage options in
eastern shale. It was among 15
projects that will receive Department of Energy
funding to develop technologies that will safely and
economically store carbon dioxide in geologic
formations. The projects will
support the goals of helping reduce U.S. greenhouse
gas emissions by developing and deploying
near-zero-emission coal technologies.
The NYSERDA funding includes $100,000 for
Cornell University, $100,000 for the University at
Buffalo, and $50,000 to Advanced Resources
International, Inc. for project management. Please

NC Solar Center Receives
Funding to Help Provide Internships and Fellowships
with a Focus on "Green Energy"
ASERTTI member, the North Carolina Solar Center,
received $373,469 in grant money from the North
Carolina Energy Office to provide undergraduate and
graduate students hands-on experience and training
for jobs in the state’s energy economy, including
"green-energy" fields.
The N.C. Energy Office created the program with
money from the federal American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act. The Center
plans to use six internships and four fellowships to
share research or projects and provide estimates of
greenhouse gas reductions from their work. Possible
positions and job experiences for participants
include bioenergy feedstock breeding and genomics,
feedstock growth, cultivation and harvesting
techniques, analysis of novel energy crops,
feedstock chemical analysis, biofuel chemical
analysis, biomass conversion systems, biofuel
refineries, economic modeling and lifecycle
analyses.
Oregon Department of Energy
Issues RFP to Study Feasibility of Renewable Energy
Projects
ASERTTI member, the Oregon Department of Energy,
recently published a Request for Proposals (RFP) for
its Community Renewable Energy Feasibility Fund
(CREFF) grants program. The CREFF program offers
grants of up to $50,000 to study the feasibility of
specific and new renewable energy, heat, and fuel
projects in Oregon. Studies may
evaluate the available renewable energy resource,
siting and permitting requirements, transmission and
interconnection, environmental footprint, and
long-term economic viability. The program only funds
a maximum of 75 percent of the cost of the work.
Successful awardees must demonstrate at least a 25
percent match. Please
