ASERTTI Fall 2010 Meeting,
October 4-7, 2010
Please mark your calendars for the fall 2010
ASERTTI meeting, which will be held October 4-7 in
Long Island, New York. Hosted by
Brookhaven National Laboratory and Long Island Power
Authority, this year's fall meeting will include
presentations on the energy programs and research
activities from both host organizations as well as
presentations on several New York based programs
including NY Best, NYS Climate Initiative and NYS
Smart Grid Consortium. Other
agenda topics that will be addressed at the meeting
include technology commercialization, modeling of
emerging technology commercialization and energy
research, solar thermal, ARPA-E and a panel
presentation from representatives of University
Energy Centers. Attendees will
also hear an overview of ASERTTI programs and the
latest Washington, DC update. In
addition to the full technical agenda, there are
some exciting team building activities planned.

Penn State to Lead
Philadelphia-Based Team that will Pioneer New
Energy-Efficient Building Designs
A team led by The Pennsylvania State University
will receive up to $122 million over the next five
years from the Department of Energy to establish an
Energy Innovation Hub focused on developing
technologies to make buildings more energy
efficient. The Energy Innovation
Hub will be located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard
Clean Energy campus, and will bring together leading
researchers from academia, two U.S. National
Laboratories and the private sector in an ambitious
effort to develop energy-efficient building designs
that will save energy, cut pollution, and position
the United States as a leader in this industry.

DOE Announces $15 Million to
Promote Innovative Geothermal Heat Recovery Methods
and Technologies
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Geothermal
Technologies Program recently announced a $15
million funding opportunity to research and develop
innovative methods to extract heat from geothermal
resources from the Earth's crust to produce clean,
renewable energy. DOE's objective through this
funding is to promote the advancement and
commercialization of technologies for heat recovery
with potentially lower environmental, technical, and
financial risks than currently available methods.
The pre-application concept papers are due
October 1, 2010 and eligible full applications will
be due November 30, 2010. For

NC Solar Center and Triangle
Clean Cities Partnership Set to Expand Alternative
Fuels
ASERTTI member, the NC Solar Center (NCSC),
received $1,084,826 as part of the "Carolina Blue
Skies and Green Jobs Initiative", a project led by
Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG), with $12
million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
(ARRA) funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Initiative will provide for major expansion of
alternative fuel vehicles and refueling
infrastructure through the collaboration of five
partners in the Carolinas: the North Carolina Solar
Center/NC State University, Triangle Clean Cities
Coalition /Triangle J Council of Governments (COG),
Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition/Centralina COG,
Land-of-Sky Clean Vehicle Coalition/Land-of-Sky COG
and the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition/South
Carolina Energy Office. The NC
Solar Center will take the lead, on behalf of
project partners, in developing training, education
and outreach materials for the approximately 40 sub
award project partners who are purchasing
alternative fuel/advanced technology vehicles and/or
installing refueling infrastructure.
